SPACE is a developer-productivity framework with five dimensions: Satisfaction, Performance, Activity, Communication, Efficiency. Authored by Forsgren, Storey, Maddila, Houck and Zimmerman and published in ACM Queue in 2021 SPACE (ACM Queue 2021)2021. SPACE complements DORA by adding the human dimensions DORA does not measure.

The five dimensions

Satisfaction: survey-based wellbeing and engagement. Performance: outcomes (CFR, quality metrics). Activity: actions and outputs (commits, PRs). Communication: collaboration patterns. Efficiency: flow and interruption metrics.

Combining SPACE with CFR

The standard pairing is SPACE survey data alongside DORA system metrics. CFR is a Performance dimension; the Satisfaction and Efficiency dimensions add context for why CFR movedDX SPACE Revisited2024.

SPACE vs DORA vs Core 4

DORA is system-only. SPACE is qualitative + quantitative. Core 4 productises a layered view with DXI as the survey instrument. None replaces the others; the modern executive stack uses all three together.
